1899-1905 HERBARIUM and ART HISTORY PAPER - NEW JERSEY

Item #821

Collection of two art projects, including an herbarium and a paper on “Historic Art.” Only one is identified as being by Mabel Garretson, though the covers, handwriting and dates are similar. They are:

Herbarium - pressed flowers from 1899-1905

This is a collection of approximately 70 preserved flowers collected in New Jersey from 1899-1905. Most are from Belle Mead, but there are a few from Lambertville, Somerville and Trenton.

Each pressed flower is glued to a white page. Each white page is housed within a folder. The envelopes are labeled with the flowers’ botanical order. On each sheet of paper in the bottom right corner is (usually) the date and location of harvest, as well as the plants scientific and common name.

This front and back cover of this book is bound with ribbon. The pressed flowers are each within folders. None are bound. Essentially, the binding acts as a larger folder. The pages are discolored. One ribbon is missing. “Herbarium” is printed in red ink on the front cover.

Historic Art - “Historic Ornament” November 14, 1905 by Mabel Garretson

Within an 8 7/8” x 11 1/4” 42 page handmade, handwritten “book”, Mabel Garretson explores the origins of art in various places throughout the globe. Her interests span sections labeled as follows: Savage Art, Ancient Art, Chinese Art, Egyptian Art, Greek Art, Roman Art, Art of the Middle Ages, Byzantine Art, Saracenic or Arabic Art, Gothic Art, and Art of the Renaissance.

Of the Middle Ages Garretson remarks: “The earliest symbols were the monogram of Christ, the lily, the cross, the ship, the serpent, the fish, the aureole or vesica Pisces, the circle or nimbus which is the glory of the head, as the vesica is of the entire body, the representing of the acrostic symbols of the fish, from the Greek word for fish, which contains the initials of the following sentence, “Jesus Christ, of God The Son, the Saviour” IXOYE”

Of the Byzantine Empire Garretson claims “Pagan art consisted of form rather than color. There was no restraint in color in the Byzantine Art. The forms of the ancients were gradually admitted among the elements of Christian decoration. A modified version of the scroll, the foliations terminating in lilies or leaves, three, four, and five blades being significant, became at last a prominent feature in Byzantine art…”

Beside Garretson’s understanding of the achievements of art in various cultures throughout time, she has provided pencil drawings to back her claims. In the Byzantine section, Mabel has provided crests of Prechristian “passion symbols”, fish symbol, and the nimbus.

Garretson’s handwriting is rounded, uniform script. The pages are numbered at the bottom right corner. Front and back covers are gray paper. Written on the front in red ink reads “Historic Art” and a symbol which can be deciphered to read: MG.
