Photo album measuring 12 1/4” x 9 ½,” with 88 pages/44 leaves, with 420 photographs pasted to the page.
Written inside the front cover is “Herbert R. Preston Jr., October, 1921, Catonsville, MD. Contents: Page 1-18 – The Yellowstone National Park, September, 1921…..Page 19-44, Banff, Lake Louise, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Salt Lake City.
At Yellowstone he photographed the Mammoth Hotel, the Chittenden Bridge, Bunson Peak, Jupiter Terrace, Hymen Terrace, Pulpit Terrace, Angel Terraces, “The Grand Canyon” of Yellowstone, several geysers, several waterfalls, as well as bears and buffalo. There is one photograph of Native people.
While in Banff National Park (mislabeled as BAMFF) Preston makes still images of the Bow River Falls, Lake Louise, the Victoria Glacier (view from the hotel), Castle Mt., Table Mt., Temple Mt., and the Canadian Pacific Railway Hotel. Along Lake Louise, be still several outcroppings of the Victoria Glacier, as well as the Morra Glacier.
He then travels south to Monterey where he focuses in on the manicured landscaping the Arizona Gardens at the Hotel Del Monte. In Santa Barbara he captures pictures on the beach, of oil rigs along the coast, and piers. He photographs The Mission. He travels through Los Angeles, Pasadena, and eastward to Salt Lake City.
He likes to focus his lens on temples, missions in the states and soon travels to Europe where he photographs WWI ruins, and places in England, Italy, and more, though after page 44, none of the pages are numerated, nor are any photographs provided with captions.
Two photos are missing (one appears to have been torn from the page while the other was cut out with scissors.). The first page is detached and there is some wear to the spine. The album is completely used and has compelling photos.
