There are 45 color snapshots in this 10” x 11.75” vinyl photo album and scrapbook, which also contains clippings and ephemera. The album documents the show Grine Felder (Green Fields) by Peretz Hirschbein, which was put on by the Yiddish Club of Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1968. Most of the photographs measure 3” x 5” and are laid onto sticky pages and covered by plastic, which is typical of this time-period.

The husband-and-wife team of Maurice and Annette Rosenthal produced and directed the play, with a cast of nine actors and it was performed entirely in Yiddish. Newspaper articles in the scrapbook reveal that this is the third year of an all Yiddish play put on by the club.

Mrs. Morris Rosenthal converted to Judaism before she married her husband. After their marriage, she discovered Yiddish, and she mastered the language along with her husband.
She soon organized a Yiddish club, comprising young couples who picked up the language and began talking in it and relaying it to their children.

A little research finds that Jewish settlers made New Mexico their home long before New Mexico’s statehood in 1912. Jews settled along the Rio Grande, lured by business opportunities during the expansive railroad days of the 1880s.

The album is complete and in good condition.
