WYOMING, NEBRASKA, SOUTH DAKOTA 1910s PHOTO ALBUM
Item #796
11 1/4” x 7 5/16” black leather photo album, with 260 snapshot photographs that vary in size. The majority of photos measure 3” x 4 3/4”. Photos are held by corner tabs, or otherwise glued to the page. The album begins and ends with endearing family portraits. The mid-section of the album documents the westward American project with photos from Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota. Images depict the working-class experience during the installation of dams, railroads (likely the Union Pacific RR), and highways across middle America. A few photos are labeled in script in white. Identified photos include the Badlands, “U.S.R.S. (U.S. Reclamation Service) Camp 20 [21, 25…]”, a temporary bridge in Nebraska, Guernsey Dam in Wyoming, etc. Pete Hansen is identified a few times in the album, and he or someone close to him, probably put this together. There is a poem composed by him that is about living alone with only the company of his cat. The album is complete and in good condition.
