Item #762

You can feel the love that went into putting together this 11.25 x 7.25” black string-bound album with “Photographs” on the front cover in gold. It has around 165 black-and-white photos and photo postcards from a trip Lillian Dudley took in 1915 to a couple of towns in Massachusetts, mainly Stoughton and Brockton. The album begins with a brief newspaper clipping about Lillian’s trip and she is careful to include details and photos from when the road trip began and where they stopped. There is a map next to which Lillian has written down the towns she stopped at enroute to Stoughton. Once in Stoughton Lillian stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Seth J. Reed. Lillian clearly enjoyed music, as she often includes clippings with the titles of records listened to on the victrola and frequently attended band concerts. Photos mostly show Lillian with her friends, automobiles, cars, and two children—Dorothy and Dudley—who seem to be her niece and nephew. There are also occasional photos of an adorable dog and pictures of soldiers camping in Boxford. She includes postcards from places she visited in Massachusetts, tickets and programs from band concerts, letters, and newspaper clippings. Other ephemera include dried leaves and flowers, chocolate wrappers, and a small pin of Samuel W. McCall from a Republic Rally that Lillian attended in Boxford. One of the more notable newspaper clippings details record heat in Boston that killed one woman and led to schools being closed. There are 2 envelopes glued to the pages: one contains 2 photos and the other contains notecards with writing and 12 photos. Photographs measure between 1 x 2.25” and 3.5 x 5.5” and are glued to the pages, accompanied by often-witty annotations. Three or four photos are missing, otherwise this delightful album is complete and in very good condition.

Example newspaper clipping
Miss Lillian Dudley left on Sunday by automobile for Stoughton, Mass., where she will be entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Seth J. Reed for a short stay after which she will go to Botsford, Mass., and make a short visit with her sister, Mrs. Robert Sopher, and her husband.

To C. W. C.
He was a Motor Maniac
He had a little Cadillac—
(It wasn’t. It was an [illegible].
But never mind - we need a rhyme.)
’Twas built for Two but often Three
Upon That single seat you’d see,—
And I’ve been Told That even four
Rode in That much-enduring car.

One day he wished to Take a spin
So hastened to the place where-in
He kept his “Betty” over night—
THERE WASN’T ANY CAR IN SIGHT!!
But there upon the wall instead
He found a message—Thus it read:

“I’ve served you faithfully and True
I’ve done the best that I could do
In summer’s heat—in winter’s cold
I’ve not complained but always rolled
As smoothly to your guiding hand
As any motor in the land.
But now at last I am quite Through.
I seek fresh fields and pastures new.
No more you’ll steer me up and down
Or Take me into Boston Town—
Or put me up at close of day—
YOUR MOTOR-CAR HAS RUN AWAY!!”

All silently he bowed his head
And many salty tears he shed.
But that he sought it far and wide
On city streets—
—Thro’ country-side—
Even tho’ he went from door To door
He never saw his “Betty” more.
(He has to walk now).

Price: $500.00
