Item #760

Worn brown album measuring 7.5 x 5.5” with “Photographs” in gold on the front cover; the edges of the covers are torn and the spine is exposed. Contains around 69 black-and-white photos from travel in German, Italy and France in the early 1900s. The album begins with a photo of Heinrich Lahmann’s sanatorium at Weisser Hirch in Dresden. Other parts of Dresden photographed include Schloss-Platz, Waldschlossen, the Elbe river, the Bridge of Loschwitz, and the Royal Gardens. There are also photos of a view of the Grand Canal from Royal Daniel, the Palace of the Doges, the Palace of King and the Lion of Saint Marks, Palazzo Vendramin, Ca D'oro Palazzo, and scenes from the Festival of Maria della Salute. There are also photos of the torture chamber at Nurnberg Fortress and Le Casino de la Jetee Promenade in Nice. Photos measure between 1.75 x 1.25” and 4 x 2” and are mounted on pieces of white paper which are then glued to the pages. All of the photos are accompanied by detailed annotations. There are around 9 loose photos, which are all identified on the verso, and are mostly from the south of France and Monaco. The front cover is peeling and the back cover is missing part and the spine is peeled away.

Example annotations
Dr. Lahmann’s Sanitorium, Weisser Hirsch bei Dresden where we learned to live the Simple Life and to forego salt.

The terrible “golden” statue. Dresden. This dreadfully offended our aesthetic sense on every trip to Dresden.

The Elbe - Where we took the boat for Pillnitz on the memorable day when the Portier said it was only “a little walk” from the boat to the car.

Festival of Maria della Salute. The officials and dignataries of the Church are more impressive than the dirty Venetian ragamuffins who have donned the garments of the Church and are officiating as bearers of candles as large as themselves.

Price: $175.00
