WWII ERA NAVY WAVES WOMEN PHOTO ALBUM

Item #710

This 15 x 11.5” ivory album features a beautiful color illustration of women of WAVES in the U.S. Navy on the front. The first item in the album is a certificate awarded to Ruth Beardsley from the University of Maryland College of Engineering for completion of a course in Engineering Drawing. Ruth used this album to document her time as a student and as part of WAVES in 1944 to 1953 in around 87 black-and-white photos. In particular, she includes photos of her friends in the U.S. Naval training school (W.R.) in Bronx, N.Y., and in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She is mostly shown relaxing with friends, but there are also simple portraits and photos of women at drills. There are some particularly beautiful photos of Washington D.C. with the cherry blossoms in bloom, which are lovely even in monochrome. There is 1 Kodacolor print. Ruth also includes photos of family, and her with children. At the back of the album is a proof portrait of a sailor. In terms of ephemera, Ruth included color illustrated postcards from Virginia, which have writing on the back, but are glued into the album in such a way that they cannot be fully read without being removed. There is also an invitation to a ship’s party on the U.S.S. Kearsarge; an article with a photo of Doris Day, who wishes “Best Always to the men aboard the U.S.S. Kearsarge” and a transcription of Eric Sevareid’s broadcast following the Korean Armistice Agreement on the other side; a small newspaper clipping about Ruth; and a booklet of “General Training Course for Petty Officers–Part I.” There are also 3 War Ration Book Four booklets issued to John E. Peterson, Jr., John E. Peterson, Sr., and Anna C. Peterson. Photographs measure between 3 x 2.25” and 9.25 x 7.75” and are held to the pages with corner tabs, with some items glued in. The earlier photos in the album are annotated on the back. There are around 3 loose photos.
