Item #626

This heavy 13.75 x 11” album features thick wooden front and back covers with metal hinges. The front cover features an image of across; above the cross it reads “V+J” while ribbons below read “Tenui Nec Dimittam”. The album appears to have been compiled by John F. Nees, who seems to have been in a Seminary in Maryland, to become a Priest. Many of the friends that Nees photographed were also men of the cloth. He includes several photos of shrines dedicated to Christ and the Virgin Mary, church services, and the cross. Annotations on the backs of some photographs identify the location as “Elkton, Md.” Nees also includes fun photos from plays, travel, and sports. Shows that he includes programs and photos from include “Why the Chimes Rong”, “The Monkey’s Paw”, “The Three Wise Guys”, and “Shamrock Shenanigans or A Costellion Compound.” The programs are loose and there are a couple of loose photos. At least 4 photos appear to be missing. Photos measure between 2.75 x 1.25” and 10 x 8” and are either held to pages with corner tabs, glued, or taped. Later in the album, Nees decided to overlap photos vertically on the pages. Some photos are annotated, but not all. The edges of the pages are brittle. There are around 300 photos dating from the 1940s.
