AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN ATTENDING SPELMAN COLLEGE 1922 PHOTO ALBUM

Item #616

5.75” x 8” photo album which belonged to an African American woman, who appears to have attended Spelman Seminary (later college) in 1922. From a newspaper clipping attached to the back, inside cover, and a couple of photos, I believe that this was put together by Beatrice Harris, who later married Edward Norton of Brunswick, Georgia. There are over seventy snapshots inside, all glued to the page. Most have handwritten annotations on the page and/or photo and many people are identified. There are photos of classmates along with family photos. The pages are very brittle, some are detached, and a few photos are loose and some appear to be missing. This album is in very delicate condition and needs help, but at the same time, it is historic and documents an African American woman attending a college known for educating women of African descent.
