Item #596

11.5 x 7.5” brown leather string-bound album with a crocodile skin pattern and “Photographs” on the cover in gold, along with gold floral patterns and the name “L. Austin Grey”. Contains over 140 black and white snapshots featuring Grey and his friends, who were all in the Army in what looks to be right after the Germans surrendered in World War II. There is a photo identified as “1st Regt, 78th Infantry Division," which is what I believe he was a part of. While the photos start in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, most of the album takes place in Germany. Grey particularly identifies Berlin, and shows photos of the mess hall, battery building, and even bombed buildings. He includes photos of the 279 Station Hospital, which he identifies as a location that they guarded. Amongst the more fascinating photos are one of the tail of a German fighter plane with the Swastika symbol, the Olympic stadium, a photo taken near Hitler’s bunker, black markets, “U.S. Stockhade prisoners under guard at mess hall,” and Olympic Stadium.
Photographs measure between 2 x 3” and 5.75 x 4.25” and are held to the pages with corner tabs, with annotations identifying places. There are about 20 commercial photos in the back of the album. Some of the photos are a bit faded, otherwise it is complete and in good condition.
