Item #501

These four small photo albums fit snugly into a faux-leather slipcase. Each album opens like a book, and on the two sides facing each other, there are twelve plastic sleeves, with two photos, back to back, in each sleeve. 2 of the albums are full, with 48 photos; two albums are missing one photo, so there are a total of 190 photos. Most often there is a small sheet of white paper between the two sleeves. The sleeves are attached on their upper side only, so they can be lifted up and the photo on the second side becomes visible. Some of these sleeves are loose/detached. The photos all measure the same 4 ⅜” x 3 ½” and all the photos, and the albums that contain them, are in excellent condition. The photos I pulled out are all date stamped 1984 on the verso, and some are identified there as well. The slipcase itself has damage to two corners. The album dimensions are 5 ½” x 8”; the slipcase measures 5 ⅞” x 6” x 8 ⅜”.

The highlight of this album, without a doubt, is the suite of 13 photos of Jerry Lee Lewis, performing at Gilley’s Club in Pasadena, Texas, near Houston. Lewis had broken his leg not long before, and there is one photograph of him on crutches. His wife at the time, Kerrie McCarver, is in two photos. At least one other photo shows Mickey Gilley singing at his club (Gilley and Lewis are cousins).

One whole album is devoted to a trip to Graceland, and Elvis’s cars and motorcycles take up half of a second album. Other venues pictured are Johnny Lee’s (which must have been a club in the Houston area, since Johnny Lee performed for a ten-year stretch at Gilley’s), Music Village U.S.A., Opryland, Loretta Lynn’s Kitchen, Loretta Lynn’s Restaurant, and Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch. Porter Wagoner appears in 6 photographs, and Boots Randolph in 5, in one of which Randolph looks to be posing with the album’s compiler. Tucked behind two photos are ticket stubs to Graceland (2), The Memphis Queen Line and a card for the New York State Elvis Club.

Whether you’re an Elvis fan, a Jerry Lee Lewis, or just a country and western music fan in general, these albums are for you.
