Item #375

15.25 x 11.5” album of Jessie Miller’s time at the University of Connecticut and beyond, ranging from 1947-1962. The album is an off-white color with the logo for the University of Connecticut picked out on the front with blue felt. The back cover sports some stains. The first page of the album is full of signatures, as if signing a yearbook. The album contains mostly black and white photos, some color photos, and ephemera from Miller’s camp counsellor days. Photos measure between 2.25 x 2.5” and 10 x 8.25” and are held to the pages by corner tabs, glue, and tape. Most of the photos depict Miller’s friends, roommates, and camp friends and activities. Miller received her Bachelor of Science in the School of Physical Education and her diploma appears at the back of the album. There are around 90 photos, with some of those loose within the album. Around five photos appear to be missing. She was a camp counsellor at Camp Waziyatah in Maine and Camp Rondack. After school, Miller went on to act as the Director of Girl’s Physical Education at St. Mary’s Hall in Burlington, N.J., Devereux Schools in Devon, P.A., and Lawrence School in Hewlett, N.Y. Aside from photos, the album features ephemera in the form of a letter from the University of Connecticut concerning “conduct unbecoming a woman student” with a note from Miller that it is “nice to be able to laugh about this now.” There is also a card with a menu and poem from campers, tickets, and brochures.
