EARLY 20TH-CENTURY TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM: EGYPT, CONSTANTINOPLE, GREECE, DALMATIA, PRAGUE, CORFU, AND THE WEST INDIES
Item #1741
String-tied album measuring 7¾” x 9½”, containing 26 gelatin silver photographs, each approximately 4” x 5”, mostly mounted two to a page with photo corners inserted into slits on the page. Most are accompanied by detailed handwritten identifications pasted to the facing pages; the photographs are additionally captioned on their versos.
A compact, well-documented record of international travel through Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Dalmatia, Corfu, and St. Lucia. Subjects include Cairo’s Mameluke tombs and Al-Azhar Mosque; feluccas on the Nile; Elephantine Island and the Aswan region; Constantinople’s walls, Golden Horn, Galata, Süleymaniye Mosque, and Hagia Sophia; marble quarrymen on Mount Pentelicus; the Temple of Apollo at Delphi; Athens street life, including donkeys laden with baskets of oranges; the Acropolis and Temple of Nike; Prague Castle and the Jewish Cemetery; Corfu; Cattaro, Dalmatia; and the beach at Soufrière, St. Lucia.
The captions are unusually informative, recording architectural and historical details as well as observations of local life. One photograph documents an English military camp and mobile gunnery unit at the Pentelicus marble quarries. Other images depict Turkish women fetching water, Nubian or Egyptian figures at Elephantine Island, quarry workers, boats, markets, religious monuments, and expansive city views.
Album and photographs show light handling and occasional fading or surface wear. One pasted identification is loose and one is lacking, though that photograph retains its identification on the verso. Otherwise complete and well preserved.
Price: $400.00
