ANONYMOUS COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ANIMATED CARTOONS TAKEN FROM TELEVISION

Item #1732

Circa 1960s–1970s. Approximately 60 vintage black-and-white photographs, most measuring about 5½" x 8", depicting individual frames from televised animated cartoons. Characters represented include Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Speedy Gonzales, and numerous other figures associated with Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, and related studios. One image appears to reproduce an animation drawing or model-sheet image.

Many photographs clearly reveal the television screen’s scan lines, curved edges, and occasional image distortion, suggesting that they were made by an unidentified viewer photographing broadcasts directly from the screen—an improvised form of frame capture predating home video. The unusually extensive group may have been assembled for personal enjoyment or for the study of character design and animation, although its original purpose is unknown.

Versos are blank, with no photographer, ownership, or studio markings. Generally very good, with occasional light handling wear, minor curling, and variations in contrast and clarity inherent in photographing a television image.

A curious vernacular archive documenting the private consumption, collection, and photographic preservation of televised animation.
