MEDICAL 1949 ATHLETIC SUPPORTER PROTECTIVE CUP SPORTS INJURY STERILITY IMPOTENCE EPHEMERA

Item #1687

Unusual group of mid-century medical/sexology-related ephemera, found together inside an old magazine. The lot includes a typed letter dated September 13, 1949 from Hartford, Connecticut, written to a “Mr. Francis” in response to an inquiry about a severe genital injury. The writer discusses traumatic epididymitis, bilateral testicular infarction, permanent sterility, nerve damage, impotence, prognosis, and the possibility of limited sexual recovery.

Also included are two handwritten pages on Roadway Express, Inc. paper, headed “Prevention & Treatment of Athletic Injuries by Dobson.” These pages discuss athletic supporters and protective cups, giving graphic case examples involving basketball, soccer, football, boxing, golf, tennis, and other sports. The text is frank, cautionary, and at times lurid, with repeated discussion of male anatomy, sterility, castration, shock, and protective equipment.

The pieces appear to have been saved together and were discovered tucked into an old magazine. A fascinating and unusual mid-century grouping at the intersection of men’s health, sports medicine, sexology, athletic equipment, and bodily injury anxiety. Some age toning, handling wear, folds, light soiling, and bleed-through/visibility from the reverse. Handwritten pages include strike-through corrections.

Price: $150.00
