An extensive and well-captioned 1916-1918 travel and family photograph album containing approximately 270 original photographs, documenting journeys across Canada and portions of the United States, with especially strong coverage of Banff, Lake Louise, Regina, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Vancouver, Chicago, Milwaukee, Montana, and Washington State.

The album measures approximately 7 x 10.25 inches. The photographs are mounted on black paper leaves, usually one to four per page, with many neatly captioned in white ink. Three photographs are detached but present. Nothing appears to be missing. Some pages are detached from the binding.

The Canadian content is especially rich, with numerous views of Banff, Bow Falls, Mount Sulphur, Tunnel Mountain, Bow River, Vermilion Lakes, Lake Louise, Lake Agnes, Bridal Falls, the Alberta/British Columbia Great Divide, Regina, Regina Beach, Regina Fair, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan threshing scenes, Nova Scotia, Kentville, Annapolis Valley, New Brunswick, Kamloops, Fernie, Cordova Bay, Kootenay Lake, Mount Stephen, Victoria, Stanley Park, Vancouver Hotel, Okanagan Lake, Peachland, Brentwood, and Vancouver Island.

Among the more desirable images are views captioned “Indians at Regina Fair,” “Indian Reserve — Kamloops, B.C.,” “The Bison — Monarch of the Park, Banff,” “The Modern Rush” in Nova Scotia with oxen, “Cutting Fence Posts, Fernie, B.C.,” “Giant Fir — Stanley Park,” “Source of Columbia and Saskatchewan Rivers,” and a train platform scene captioned “A stop at Trentham.”

The album also includes strong American travel material, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Great Falls, Montana, and Ellensburg to Wenatchee, Washington. Chicago views include the Art Institute, Michigan Avenue, the lakefront, bathing scenes, the Christopher Columbus steamer, and a street scene captioned “After a ‘Welcome Home’ — Michigan Avenue, Chicago.” Milwaukee views include Lake Park, Lake Michigan, the Milwaukee River, and a raised bridge. There is also a fine automobile photograph captioned “The ‘Stage’ — Ellensburg to Wenatchee,” showing an early touring car marked for the Ellensburg and Wenatchee stage route. There are also a few photos from a trip to the United Kingdom.

Additional subjects include lake excursions, steamships, bathing beaches, rural roads, ox teams, threshing, farm labor, hotels, cottages, logging and timber work, family portraits, railway travel, and scenic views across the Canadian Rockies and both Canadian coasts.

Condition is generally very good overall. The album contains approximately 270 photographs, with three detached but present. Some pages are detached from the binding. No photographs appear to be missing. The photographs themselves are generally clear, with good period detail and attractive handwritten captions throughout.

A substantial and appealing early 20th-century North American travel album, notable for its extensive Canadian coverage, western scenery, Indigenous-related captioned images, bison, agriculture, timber work, railway travel, British Columbia and Nova Scotia views, and added urban and travel scenes in Chicago, Milwaukee, Montana, and Washington.
