Outstanding early Canadian wilderness and sporting photograph album documenting repeated hunting, fishing, canoeing, guiding, and camp trips from 1916 through 1930. The album measures 7.25" x 11" and contains about 170 photographs, including four loose photographs in the rear pocket. Photos measure approximately 3.5" x 5.5" and 2.75" x 4.25". Forty-three mostly double-sided black paper pages are used, with a few unused pages remaining.

The album is heavily captioned throughout in period ink and white pencil, with an unusually strong narrative quality. Identified places and subjects include Rocky Lake, Cranberry Pond, Cranberry Pond Brook, Great Pubnico Lake, Burnt Barrens, St. Michael’s, Little Barrens, Long Lake, Mirror Lake, Falling Pine Landing, Seven Brook, and various camps, brooks, bogs, and lakes. Captions include “Examining Moose Sign,” “Taken from the big rock on Burnt Ridge East of Cranberry Pond Brook Camp,” “Burnt Barrens at 1918 East of Great Pubnico Lake,” “Built Iceboat Fall 1922 / Did Not Go Hunting,” “At Larkins Point May 1925,” “The Diggers,” “Still Digging,” “This is what he snapped,” “18 trout weighed 11 lbs 18 hours out of water,” “Very young calf female moose vicinity Cranberry Pond Brook Camp,” and “Samuel Glode with his live jokers.”

Images include hunters and guides with rifles, canoe parties, oxen hauling a cart with antlers, rustic log and lumber camps, tent camps, fishing scenes, moose sign, cranberry picking, camp construction, lakeside landings, brooks, bogs, and remote wooded terrain. The album has especially strong moose-related content, including hunters with a bull moose, moose being transported by canoe, men examining moose sign, a young moose calf photographed near Cranberry Pond Brook Camp, and several guide/camp scenes with named individuals. Some of the best images show canoes moving through narrow waterways, camp shelters in the woods, a lumber mill on Great Lake in 1916, and Johnnie Glode with his ox team.

The album has a gray patterned cloth cover and black paper leaves. General wear to the album, including rubbing, edge and corner wear, binding/spine wear, and some page wear. Photographs show typical age toning, light silvering, handling wear, and occasional creasing or mounting wear, but overall the images present well. A remarkable and substantial Canadian sporting album with excellent hunting, fishing, guide, canoe, camp, lumber, wildlife, and wilderness content spanning roughly fourteen years.
