Item #1639

A compelling early 20th-century photographic group consisting of thirteen large-format black-and-white photographs, each measuring approximately 6" x 8", together with one real photo postcard. The group is believed to have originated in Pocahontas, Virginia, a coalfield town in Tazewell County, though the location is not otherwise identified beyond the visible “Virginian Theatre” signage in one of the exterior views.

The photographs appear to document an African American social, entertainment, or commercial venue, possibly a club, lodge, restaurant, or recreation space connected with the Virginian Theatre. One exterior photograph shows a long line of predominantly African American men gathered outside the theatre, apparently waiting to enter. Other images show African American cooks, waiters, and kitchen staff posed with trays, knives, and food-service tools; musicians with banjo, horn, saxophone, drum, and piano; a pool hall interior; kitchen and meat-preparation rooms with equipment and cold-storage doors; a dining room or restaurant interior; and a general store or mercantile interior with shelves of canned goods. Two kitchen views show white men posed in work areas, adding to the sense that the archive documents several connected interior and exterior spaces around the same venue or business.

Several images, including the real photo postcard, appear to show a well-dressed lawman or local official. He is seen posed in formal dress with hat, cane, watch chain, and, in the postcard, what appears to be a holster or sidearm. In another view, he stands near the Virginian Theatre entrance or gate. While not identified, the repeated presence of this figure suggests he may have been a sheriff, deputy, marshal, constable, or other local authority associated with the venue or event.

Taken together, the photographs suggest a Black social or entertainment venue with dining, music, recreation, and food-service components, along with the presence of a possible local lawman or official. The group is especially strong for African American occupational, musical, commercial, recreation, law-enforcement, and community-life content. The interiors are rich in detail, including kitchen equipment, cold-storage doors, pool tables, dining furnishings, musical instruments, signage, merchandise displays, clothing, and architectural details.

The photographs show expected age wear, including light surface marks, edge and corner wear, small bends or chips, and some variation in contrast. The real photo postcard is notably faded. Overall, a fascinating and visually detailed archive with strong African American social-history interest.
