Large 19th-century hand-enhanced photographic portrait of a woman, possibly Native American or Indigenous. The image measures approximately 6.5" x 8.5" and appears to be a photographic portrait with extensive handwork in charcoal, graphite, ink, and wash. The sitter is shown bust-length, facing forward, with darkened hair, a small ornament or object at the crown, and a boldly rendered dress with lace collar and long bow or tie.

The portrait has a compelling directness, with especially strong handwork to the eyes, brow, hair, collar, and clothing. The underlying photograph appears to have been substantially reworked by the artist, giving the image a striking folk-art quality. Decorative ink marks are visible along the upper edge.

Exact origin and sitter unidentified. Condition shows toning, foxing and spotting, surface soiling, edge and corner wear, small losses, and unevenness to the support, as shown. A visually arresting example of 19th-century vernacular photographic enlargement and hand embellishment.
