Large and visually rich personal travel scrapbook documenting a January 1985 trip to Hong Kong by two male travelers. Oblong album, measuring approximately 13" x 14.75", containing 31 double-sided pages with approximately 110 original glossy color photographs, together with a varied and appealing group of contemporary travel ephemera.
The album preserves a well-organized record of the journey, with photographs of Victoria Peak, Aberdeen, Hong Kong harbor views, Jumbo Floating Restaurant, street scenes, neon signage, nightlife, candid portraits, and scenes from excursions associated with Macau and China-tour travel. Several pages are arranged with presentation captions including Faces of China, Victoria Peak, Aberdeen, Ying & Yang, Pearl Buck Lives!, and Neon Nights, giving the album an unusually intentional narrative and visual structure.
Also present is a strong group of associated ephemera, including airline and baggage material, boarding pass elements, business cards, stickers, labels, tickets, taxi-related pieces, restaurant and souvenir material, and a typed Marco Polo Tours / Northwest Orient itinerary outlining travel from January 19 through January 28, 1985. This itinerary materially anchors the album in time and place and enhances its documentary value.
Of particular note are several pages devoted to Hong Kong’s neon-lit streets and nightlife, including unusual tattoo-related images with signage and a photographed Ricky Tattoo display, details that contribute to the album’s strong period character and urban documentary interest.
A substantial vernacular archive of travel, urban observation, and self-conscious scrapbook compilation, notable for its scale, visual energy, and preservation of both photographs and ephemeral material. A vivid surviving record of Hong Kong in the mid-1980s.
Condition: General wear to album and leaves; photographs housed in protective plastic sleeves with expected glare and minor handling evidence. Overall very good, with the contents visually strong and well preserved.
