Scholars in Uniform — Yale University ASTP Signal Corps Co. D Panorama, 1944

Item #1592

Oversized panoramic silver-gelatin group photograph of Company D, Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.), Signal Corps Specialized Unit 1149, posed on the grounds of Yale University, Spring 1944. The ASTP was the U.S. Army’s wartime initiative to train technically skilled enlisted men at American universities—especially for engineering, communications, medicine, and language specialties—before the program was sharply reduced in 1944 as the Army redirected manpower to combat units.

The image captures several hundred uniformed trainees, arranged in deep ranks with Yale’s campus architecture behind them, a vivid intersection of Ivy League collegiate life and mid-war mobilization. The company appears racially integrated, with Black and white soldiers seated and standing together—an important visual record of changing demographics and roles in U.S. military training during WWII.

The photographer’s credit is printed at lower right: “Samuel Kravitt, New Haven, Conn.” Kravitt was a New Haven commercial photographer who documented many Yale-area events and military units during the war years.

This panoramic photo measures 41" x 8" and it is in good overall condition.

Price: $100.00
