Imperial Japanese Navy “Yokaren” Flight Training Photo Album

Oblong 7" x 10" album. Cloth-backed boards, 82 original silver gelatin photographs mounted to gray leaves by corner tabs and/or glue (two photographs missing). Images range from approx. 2.5" x 3.5" to 4" x 6".

An evocative and well-preserved photo album from the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Yokaren (Preparatory Flight Training) program, belonging to a First-Class Flight Preparatory Trainee (海軍甲種飛行予科練習生). The title inscription on the opening leaf translates: “Album from my time as a Navy First-Class Flight Preparatory Trainee.”

The album documents both the strict discipline and the lively camaraderie of naval cadet life:

Formal portraits of the compiler and classmates in summer khaki and winter dark uniforms, each with anchor insignia on the sleeve.

Athletic and gymnastic drills, including vaulting, tumbling, balancing, acrobatics, and coordinated group exercises performed in athletic dress.

Sports and leisure scenes: a baseball team in uniform, swimming group portraits, informal snapshots of classmates outdoors.

A large-format postcard portrait of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, heavily decorated with medals and sashes.

Several studio portraits identified in manuscript, preserving the names of fellow trainees.

The Yokaren program (short for Yoka Renshūsei) trained thousands of young men as naval aviators. The Kōshu (First-Class) track accepted students with higher academic preparation, fast-tracking them for roles as pilots and officers. Many went on to active combat service in the Pacific War, and some were later mobilized as kamikaze pilots.

Albums such as this were carefully assembled keepsakes of service, blending official images with personal snapshots. This example stands out for its combination of aviation training content, athletic demonstrations, named classmates, and the inclusion of Yamamoto’s portrait.

It is in good overall condition. Edges of the album are rubbed with minor chips. 82 photographs present (2 missing); most images sharp and well-preserved, a few with light silvering or creasing. Some mounts show adhesive traces or wear.
