Panoramic Photograph — New Jersey All State High School Orchestra, 30th Annual Concert, Atlantic City, 1958
Item #1535
Large silver gelatin panoramic photograph, 10” x 31”, showing the assembled members of the New Jersey All State High School Orchestra at their 30th Annual Concert, held at Convention Hall, Atlantic City, on November 8, 1958. Manager: Wm. J. Mahan; Conductor: Wm. Brooks; Assistant Manager: Edward W. Stroh.
The image captures around one hundred young musicians, posed with their instruments — strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion — along with their conductors and managers, in front of a brick building. Many students hold violins, trombones, cellos, French horns, and upright basses, while sousaphones and percussion rest in the front. Their fashions — plaid skirts, cardigans, striped shirts, horn-rimmed glasses, and saddle shoes — provide a vivid window into late-1950s high school culture.
Photographed by Hess, Atlantic City. Some edge wear, light creasing, and minor cracking. Overall a striking and well-preserved group portrait from mid-century American music education.
