Making Hay, Noxubee County, Mississippi — Photograph by Dora Henley, 1945
Item #1509
Original 8” x 10” silver gelatin photograph depicting three farm workers and a team of mules piling hay in a Mississippi field. One man stands atop the wagon stacking hay, while others load from the ground. A large haystack dominates the left side of the image, set against a dramatic sky with cumulus clouds.
This print has hand-applied painted highlights, visible on the hay and on one worker’s clothing, lending the image an unusual tonal depth and painterly effect.
Verso bears typed and handwritten notes: “Making Hay. By Dora Henley. Bought 4/26/45. Noxubee County, Mississippi.”
An evocative rural Southern scene, capturing both the physical labor of haymaking and the persistence of mule-drawn agriculture at mid-century. Strong tonal contrasts, well-composed, and with full documentation of location, photographer, and date of acquisition.
