NEW YORK CITY STREET PHOTOGRAPHY ARCHIVE BY WILLIAM “BILL” ANGOTTI, 1976–77

Item #1496

Urban photographer William “Bill” Angotti snapped these twenty photographs on the streets on New York City. Twelve 8”x10” prints are contained in a single plastic sheath. Six images which vary in size are glued to 11”x14” watercolor paper within a watercolor pad of seven sheets. Two additional photos are mounted on 1/16” thick 11”x14” stiff card stock.

These photographs were made in 1976 and 1977. All but one image is accompanied with location and other identifying information either written on recto, verso, or, if glued then, below the image.

Angotti’s images of New York offer a broad stroke of the economy post-fiscal crisis of 1975. Peep shows cost twenty-five cents, WBAI radio station was fundraising, men can be seen gambling over dice in the park, a magician with a tin can perfects his craft in Washington Square Park, Time Square (before it was cleaned up), etc. Other images capture pedestrians walking down the streets of Chelsea, clowns in Greenwich, and the Real Aunty Mame, Marion Tanner, in her pajamas.

According to a note written on verso of watercolor paper pad, “Bill Angotti…was a photo editor for The Associated Press in 1968 and worked free lance as a researcher & photographer for the famous N.Y. City photographer Sy Seidman”

The photos are good overall condition. A couple have some marks to the image, but most remain in very good condition. There are two photos of the clown and magician photos.

Price: $750.00
