"African American Baptist Nurses Guild & First Aid Ephemera Album, St. John District, Bay Area CA, 1976–1985"
Item #1487
This compelling scrapbook documents a vibrant chapter of Bay Area African-American Baptist life between 1976 and 1985, focusing on the First Aid Department and Nurses Guilds affiliated with the St. John District Missionary Baptist Association. Compiled with care—possibly by Sister Daisy Cleveland of Berkeley or Alma L. Matthews—the album captures the ceremonial and devotional culture of mid-century Black Baptist congregations across Northern California.
Measuring 11 ½” x 9 ¾” x 1” and bound in a sturdy spiral album, this 10-leaf (20-page) scrapbook contains 37 items, including:
Folded printed programs for Nurses Guild prayer services and annual banquets
Candid and posed photographs of nurses, pastors, and attendees
Award ribbons
One 1985 Homegoing (funerary) program
Additional loose related ephemera
Churches represented include:
Mt. Calvary Baptist Church
Macedonia Baptist Church, Richmond, CA
Evergreen Baptist Church, Oakland, CA
North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church, Richmond, CA
Morning Star Baptist Church, Oakland, CA
Ephesian Church of God in Christ, Berkeley, CA
Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Chowchilla, CA
A portrait of Dr. S. M. Lockridge, the influential preacher, appears at both the beginning and end of the album, hinting at a possible connection or dedication. The presence of multiple signatures and notations—including that of Alma L. Matthews, dated 1982—adds a layer of provenance and personality to the collection.
The album itself is in very good condition. Its glossy exterior and spiral spine remain intact with minimal wear. However, the aging plastic sleeves inside have become fragile and may slip if not handled with care. The internal arrangement is stable, but gentle use is advised.
A poignant and well-preserved artifact of faith, community, and Black women’s service leadership in the late 20th century Bay Area.
