BERTHA A. PUTNEY OF BOSTON - MUSIC TEACHER - CABINET CARD PHOTOS THROUGH THE YEARS c.1883 - c. 1900s

Item #1383

This unusual lot of 29 cabinet cards follows the well-to-do Miss Bertha A. Putney from childhood into middle age. Several photographer’s studios were used throughout the years: E.S. Dunshee & Co., Ritz, F.F. Dunshee & A.E. Hill, Metzler’s Studio, Elmer Chickering, “The Ideal Studio”, Notman Photo Co., and Clifton G. Bradford’s. Three photos do not provide studio or location information.

Preliminary research suggests that Bertha A. Putney married into the name Bertha Putney Dudley and pursued a career in music education which led to her promotion to Principal of the Vocal Department and Preceptress of the Girls Dormitory at the Holderness Summer School of Music for Girls in Boston, Massachusetts. This is indicated in an advertisement in the Journal of Education Vol. 83, No. 22 from June 1, 1916.

Two photos are identified as Putney. In one made by Elmer Chickering of Boston, it provides the name of the abundantly photographed Bertha A. Putney. Her name is written in script below her image on the photograph itself. Below her name reads: S.L.H.S. 1898. A high school portrait — her senior portrait, perhaps.

Two images from her teenage years are duplicates. All are in good condition.

Price: $200.00
