1922 TRAVEL PHOTO ALBUM - MIDDLE EAST and EUROPE

Some gorgeous photographs adorn this account of a most astounding journey through the old world in 1922, with an emphasis on sites of antiquity.

The itinerary is as follows: Funchal, Madeira, off the coast of Portugal; Seville and Granada, Spain; Blidah and the Cascade Mountains, Algeria; Pompeii, Naples and coastal towns, in Italy; Athens, Greece; Constantinople (not yet Istanbul!), Turkey; Beirut, (not yet Lebanon), Syria; Jerusalem, the Holy Land; Cairo, Luxor, Karnak and Aswan, Egypt.

After visiting the above places, our travelers get back aboard a remarkably fast ocean liner (the “George Washington”, pictured in several photographs on the first pages of the volume. The ship served the US Navy in both World Wars and was German-built and was the third-largest boat in the world at the time of construction, and though it was designed for comfort over speed, it offered both).

The album measures 12 1/4” x 9 1/2” x 1”, landscape orientation and contains 95 photos. The covers are present but the sheet of textured cowhide leather that was originally pasted on both is completely gone, and survives only in small fragments next to the lace binding. But the covers have done a very good job in protecting the precious contents within.

42 leaves/84 pages, only the first half are used (the trip covered much territory, but was actually very short, lasting from late February through early April, 1922). Black paper, in excellent condition, with some bumping/chipping along the top edge of a few pages.

Most photos are captioned: the captions are printed directly into the photos through the negative, in a mostly clear hand, and these are glossy; the un-captioned and these are generally matte. The last page of the album is of a stronger paper, and includes a pocket for tucking in more photos or perhaps documents. The pocket, at any rate, is empty.
