SOUTH GERMANY FAMILY PORTRAIT ALBUM SNAPSHOT PHOTOS 1903-1943
Item #1340
20 leaves/40 pages, the last 5 leaves are blank. 12 3/8” x 9” x 1 1/4”, landscape orientation. Faded black pages, all intact and in good condition, separated by wax dividers with a cobweb motif (one of which is torn). Many photos are captioned, in German, in white cursive. 113 black and white photos total, two appear to be missing; plus four additional photos tucked in-between pages, and one postcard attached with a paperclip. A small envelope with half a dozen business cards, of one Ernst Eller - Landwirt (“farmer”), is also tucked between the pages.
Altogether, this is a sentimental assemblage of family portraits (plus a few landscapes photographs) of a family living in southeastern Germany. Roughly 1903-1943, one portrait is possible pre-1900
Though the period covered spans both wars, there is no mention made of either - no uniforms, no materièl, no casualties - and, indeed, very few photos from the actual years of conflict. The photographs are not organized in chronological order.
An expedition (“Ausflüge”) to the German Protectorate of Douala, in Cameroon, central Africa - pith helmets, hunting rifles, white dresses. A skiing trip to the Tirol. A spa trip to Bad Wörishofen. A wedding in 1935. A four-photo spread from 1929 of early car and motorcycle models, even a tractor. Sober portraits of “Mutter” opposite one of “Vater”.
The front cover is detached and entirely split in cross-section - so one can see the cardboard within and the method of construction. The back cover is split thus along the bottom half but still solid. Overall decent condition, with little damage or tearing to pages or photos.
Price: $300.00
