CANADIAN MUSICIAN HENRI GROULX PHOTO ALBUM MONTREAL 1930s-1950s
Item #1254
90 photographs 18 leaves/34 pages
In this album is a host of photographs of Henri Groulx, a Canadian organist (not to be confused with the politician of the same name). Several photographs depict Henri as a young boy among his schoolmates in primary school, while the majority of images show Henri as an adult. This album is a collection of professional and personal photographs, seemingly like a scrapbook in order to document his life (not arranged by the subject himself).
Groulx situated himself in several trios and orchestral arrangements, as well he played solo throughout his musical career. It appears he made an appearance on Armand Carpentier’s stage at the Hotel de Montreal.
Several photographs were taken by professional photographers, especially those to do with his musicianship; including journalistic photography.
During the war, in 1939, Groulx worked with the Hepworth Lachine Engineering Company.
All annotations and newspaper clipping are written in French.
A Google translation from French to English of the newspaper clipping reads:
“The Galipeau Music School Inc. is pleased to announce to its customers that it has retained the services of a renowned organist as organ and accordion teacher, Mr. Henri Groulx.
Mr. Groulx began his musical studies at the age of 6; piano, accordion, double bass, were his first weapons. Later he took lessons in harmony and musical arrangement with Master G. Agostini.
He then became a teacher at Marazza, while working with several renowned orchestras in cabarets and on the radio.
During the war, he joined the Kiwanis International troupe. He then resumed his musical studies with Mr. Paradis. Since then, his career has been oriented towards the profession of professional organist. He has been the star in several hotels in the Metropolis and the suburbs, including the Club de Golfe de Lachute, Hotel Le Cavalier, Hotel Champlain, Le Réveillon to name a few. He currently plays at the Clermont Steak House in Rosemère. There is no doubt that his skills will be highly appreciated by the distinguished clientele of the Galipeau Music School. In good overall condition.
Photos vary in size. Photographs are on sticky paper, though the stickiness has worn away. Some pages are taped closed. The cover art is incongruous with the photo material of the interior.
