Who was the staff artist at The Denver Times. This album holds nearly 200 newspaper clippings of his work at The Denver Times, a few from The Rocky Mountain News and some advertisements. Sections of the newspaper are from 1915-1916. Several photographs of Harold Hull himself as well as photographs of his artwork appear to be from 1913-1915. There are also three original illustrations.
Hull’s illustrations accompany several tragic stories, including the story of a presumed crime scene, the “Denver Automobile Tragedy”, and the story that broke the “Eastland Steamship Disaster”. Hull also illustrated many advertisements. These advertisements were for Columbia Records, the Fay Bros. Meat Market Co., Schaffer Auto Supply, Scripps Booth Luxury Cars, Pritt’s Bran Bread, and Oldsmobiles. Hull regularly advertised for Jefferay’s department store (1635 Jeffery Curtis.) “where the “utmost” in haberdashery awaits you”. Hull also sketched advertisements for plays and musicals.
Hull’s illustrations embellished breaking journalistic stories, advertisements, and the newspaper masthead. His illustrations were also used to celebrate the life of one of Colorado’s earliest pioneers, Dennis Sullivan. And, several drawings display Hull’s comedic deftness, such as a man “boxing” with his lawyer in the courtroom.
There are 17 photographs in total. All taken to by “Martin” showing the artist at work. Two photographs spread across the inside front cover show Harold Hull at work - in his home - at four in the morning. These two photographs have been hand tinted to provide Harold with blush and his artwork with color. Photographs at the other end of the album display Hull in his silk boxers, smoking a pipe in bed, and reading The Rock Mountain News on a rooftop with a cigarette between his lips. Several other photographs are of his artwork hanging on the wall. At the end of the album are three original drawings by Hull.
The cover page embossed in gold text reads: “Illustrations by Harold Ware Hull, Denver”. The back board is embossed in gold text: “First Anniversary from Martin to Mr. & Mrs. Harold Ware Hull”. In one of the large photos shown, you can see a sign for “Hull & Martin.” I imagine that the anniversary that is mentioned is a collaboration anniversary. The last two pages re detached, and there is wear to the spine and edges. A few full pages from the newspapers have edge wear to the folds. The album is complete and is a terrific collection.
