LONG BEACH CA HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PHOTO ALBUM EARLY 1930s

Item #1072

A fun collection of amateur sports photos, mostly football, in black and white, from the early 1930s.

The album is well preserved, with only minor issues of rubbing and fraying. 45 black leaves/90 pages, a couple detached; last six leaves unused and on most of the leaves only the recto is utilized, the verso blank; There are over 150 photos included, with 19 loose and tucked in; only a couple of photos appear to be missing.

Many of the football shots are staged “action scenes”, all teammates smiling and clearly having fun - running, jumping, tackling, hiking, etc. One full-page photo, presented sideways, shows our hero with a basketball; otherwise, there are many baseball photos, both in-game action and player/team portraits. Numerous photos depict graduation day, with caps and gowns; many small portraits show various sweethearts and co-eds; some nice beachside scenes, and some typical homes in Los Angeles.

About twenty of the photos are pure action poses, devoid of background; these were cut out of larger photos and interspersed among the other sporting pictures in the middle part of the album. A team photo of 37 men, including coaches, is included at the end of this group of photos; Voorhees, clearly the captain, is center front, holding the football.

Another fun group of photos shows the teammates posing in their v-neck sweaters and plus-fours, enjoying the sunshine, their youth, and each other’s company; one of the players is holding up a newspaper, but it is impossible to discern either masthead or headline - only that it is football-related. Clearly, they are relishing a victory of some sort.

A few photos show men wearing sweaters with 1935 on the front. These photos were printed in 1931, so they were taken when they were freshmen. The span of activity covered here clearly begins in the late 1920s. The only specific place visited is Avilá Adobe, oldest house in LA, pictured behind a woman in jacket, skirt and fedora.

A terrific album for the sports fan!

Price: $250.00
